But why does an edging always have to be invisible? Sometimes it really pays off to use edgings with a contrasting colour, pattern or structure to achieve impressive design effects.
Edgings in contrasting colours
One good way of using edgings to create a particular look is to combine plain panel surfaces with wood-patterned edgings or vice versa. And this is true of all furniture – not just children’s play things. Living room, bedroom and kitchen furniture can also benefit from the occasional use of contrasting colours on a narrow edge. This helps to break-up the monotone appearance of the particular surface. The furniture becomes much more individualised.
Fantasy decors
Those preferring things a little more discrete can combine monochrome fantasy decors, such as the high-gloss ABS edgings Esprit black, Linen or Serpentin Blanc with plain surfaces in high-gloss white, grey or black. This gives the furniture an individualistic flourish, augmenting the uniqueness of character and the overall high-grade impression exuded by the piece.
Aluminium edgings
Aluminium edgings match practically any panel surface. Used in kitchens, they provide a sophisticated complement to the metallic surfaces of built-in appliances, sinks and taps. With their very high impact and abrasion resistance, they also provide an ideal edging for furniture designed to meet special requirements. Instead of using matching materials for skirting, try using wide ABS edgings with a real aluminium finish to give kitchen furniture a really special look.
3D acrylic edgings
Great designer effects can also be achieved with 3D acrylic edgings. The edgings have a three-dimensional effect, as the decor, which is printed at the back, can be seen through the transparent acrylic layer. Applying 1mm-thick 3D acrylic edging to a contrastingly-coloured board will create an attractive optical zero bondline, even if only using a conventional edgebanding machine.
3D acrylic LED
Special 3D acrylic LED edgings, such as the high-gloss, translucent 3D acrylic LED edgings Stripe in white-stainless steel or the high-gloss, translucent 3D acrylic LED edgings lines in white/black can be backlit with LED strips. A recess for the LED strip has to be milled underneath the edging. The edging can then be applied as normal. The indirect lighting effect along the edges enables this type of furniture to create an attractive effect.
