The many shades of white

In Western culture the colour white is associated with happiness and cleanliness. That’s probably why it is such a popular colour in furniture. However, not all whites are the same! In Ostermann’s extensive range there are more than 80 different white edgings.

In commercial construction the colour white is still the main colour and ever-popular for laboratories, clinics and doctors’ practices. In the furniture industry white is once again becoming very popular.

White furniture used to be more of a standard colour, but for some years now the ‘colour without colour’ is a genuine design trend. Not only are more and more cars, computers and mobile phones produced in white, but in the home this bright furniture colour is increasingly making a comeback. In shop fitting, cool white – frequently in high gloss – is the trend and shows products and goods to their best advantage through deliberately minimalist design.

Not all whites are the same
In the RAL colour palette there are seven different shades of white: from oyster white, cream and grey white over signal white and pure white to traffic white and papyrus white. The percentage of pigments determines the whiteness. On its own, each RAL shade looks white. If the various shades are placed next to each other the differences quickly become clear. So it is with good reason that architects and planners define an exact shade for white furniture in shopfitting and commercial construction. Only by doing this can we be sure that the desired shade of white is consistently observed. This applies not only to the surfaces but also to the matching edges.

White edgings must match
In the Ostermann range of white edgings there are many more variations apart from the seven RAL shades. Ostermann has selected the matching edges for more than 65 European board manufacturers. Ostermann’s extraordinary variety of white edgings has been made possible by the fact that almost every manufacturer has the popular white surfaces in its range.

Surface finish
Apart from the various shades of white, it is mainly the style and the surface finish which differentiate the individual white edgings. That’s why Ostermann has smooth and super matt, gloss and high gloss white edgings in its range. The styles range from minipearl to ash pore, wood pore linear and wood structure to edgings with textile and stone style finish. In addition there are the popular light edgings in various materials, such as in ABS, in 3-D acrylic edgings and melamine as well as T-bar edgings, not to mention that the edgings are available from Ostermann in many different widths and thicknesses.

Always the matching edging for the board
Ostermann recommends that, for white boards, customers first take a glance at the cross-reference list (CRL). It can be found in the Ostermann edgings catalogue from page 281 or on www.ostermann.eu. It’s even easier in the Ostermann online shop. Simply enter the board number in the quick search and click the search button. Then the edgings selected for the board are shown.
