Our Woodland Heritage - rooted in the past, growing for our future

You know we face a climate crisis. But did you know more than half of the UK’s woodlands are not sustainably managed? Plus, the UK is the third largest net importer of forest products, behind China and the USA.

We simply aren’t making the most of what we have. ‘Productive Woodland’ is part of the answer. It increases sustainability and biodiversity and is the driving force behind Woodland Heritage’s activities and impact.1

Woodland Heritage is creating a thriving UK wood culture that benefits our environment, all people and our economy.

The charity does this by championing the good use of home-grown timber from sustainable, productive woodlands for the benefit of present and future generations.

Through a combination of demonstration sites, research, education, membership and outreach, it builds on the wisdom and skills of the past to weather the challenges of tomorrow. Put simply: Grow trees. Use wood. For our future.

Rooted in the past, growing for our future

Landmark sites like James Wood in Somerset and Whitney Sawmills in Herefordshire demonstrate the value of productive woodland first hand. These places bring people together to share skills, experience and research.

Use knowledge gained yesterday to weather the challenges of tomorrow

Research is underway to keep forests healthy and producing the highest quality timber.

Woodland Heritage is preserving oak trees by partnering on a new PhD project to better understand the effects of management practices on Acute Oak Decline.

And it is broadening horizons on the ‘Woodland to Workshop’ course, where attendees from all aspects of the supply chain are taught by industry experts.

A powerful knowledge network branching throughout the UK
