Rosebirch embraces change & improves workflow with Microvellum’s software

As deadlines loomed, Stephen Flynn found himself facing familiar pressures – revisions piling up, materials being reworked, and an already stretched workforce navigating a demanding production schedule. For years, Rosebirch had relied on manual processes, but with demand rising across the UK and Europe, the need for a more structured approach became clear.

Founded in 1978 by Brian Flynn and now led by his son, Stephen, Rosebirch has built a reputation for high-quality shopfitting and joinery, delivering fit-outs for high street retailers, food chains, and cinemas. Operating from a 12,000 sq. ft. facility, they take pride in their craftsmanship—but sourcing skilled tradespeople has become increasingly difficult. With a team of 17 employees and tight deadlines, production complexity continued to grow.

"We knew we needed to evolve, but adopting new technology was a significant shift," said Stephen Flynn. "Microvellum has given us new ways to approach efficiency and production."

A step-by-step approach to change

With 25 years of AutoCAD experience, Stephen recognised potential in Microvellum’s AutoCAD-based software. Unlike previous modernisation efforts, this solution aligned well with their existing workflow. However, implementation required a dedicated effort—adjusting long-standing processes and ensuring the team had the right training to fully integrate the system.

As the team adapted to the new process, they gradually began to see tangible benefits in efficiency and production capacity. Manual input was reduced, helping to minimize errors and optimize material usage. Previously, designers spent hours double-checking measurements and manually preparing toolpaths for the CNC—where a single mistake could result in wasted materials and costly rework. With automation in place, the team has improved workflow efficiency, reducing time spent on repetitive tasks.

Advanced reporting provided deeper insight into production timelines, resource allocation, and costs, allowing for more informed decision-making. A reduction in material waste has contributed to cost savings, while streamlined production processes have helped improve turnaround times. Projects now move through production an average of two weeks faster, increasing capacity without compromising standards. The quoting process has also improved, allowing for quicker turnaround times and enhanced client responsiveness.

Integration with Biesse Machinery

Rosebirch’s adoption of Microvellum has also extended to their Biesse machinery, including an edge bander, beam saw, and CNC nesting system. The software automates toolpath generation, nesting optimization, and machining data transfer, reducing manual input and minimizing the risk of errors.

This direct connection between software and machinery has enabled Rosebirch to scale efficiently while maintaining precision and quality. Microvellum’s training and support calls provided valuable guidance throughout the transition, helping the team navigate the learning curve.

"The support we received made all the difference," Stephen noted. "We weren’t just given software; we were given the tools and knowledge to make it work for us."

Looking ahead – planning for the future

As Rosebirch refines its processes and continues adapting to its new workflow, new considerations have emerged. As manufacturing moves faster, products are quickly packaged, labelled, and palletized, increasing the need for effective space utilization. While they currently rely on artic trailers for storage, the growing volume of work has made storage capacity a challenge—a positive sign of their ongoing success. Looking ahead, they are evaluating options to expand their facility to support long-term growth.

With new efficiencies in place, Rosebirch is well-positioned to take on larger projects while maintaining the craftsmanship and quality they are known for.
