Moss Joinery boosts efficiency and capacity with HOMAG beam saw

Moss Joinery has achieved new levels of efficiency, capacity and cut quality by replacing a manual, labour-intensive cutting process with a SAWTEQ S-200 and smartWOP. As a result, the company is now positioned for accelerated growth.

About the company

For Moss Joinery, investing in modern machinery has always been key to balancing traditional craftsmanship with the demands of a growing business.

Founded in 1996 and based in Somerset, the company has built a strong reputation for delivering bespoke furniture, windows, doors and cabinetry, combining skilled craftsmanship with advanced manufacturing technology.

Its latest investment – a SAWTEQ S-200 beam saw supported by smartWOP – marks another step forward in improving efficiency, consistency and future growth potential.

Driving efficiency through investment

Like many manufacturers experiencing steady demand, Moss Joinery recently turned its focus to streamlining production without compromising quality.

“We were experiencing consistent levels of business, and we were looking at ways to become more efficient,” explains Matthew Barnes, Director at Moss Joinery. “We had a trusty old panel saw with a skilled operator manning it, but during busy periods it would require two operators, and a lot of the work was manual.

“Having seen HOMAG beam saws at an open day in Castle Donington, we knew it made perfect sense to embrace a more automated approach for this key stage of production.”

A natural choice

For Moss Joinery, choosing HOMAG was a straightforward decision, built on both reputation and experience.

“For us, HOMAG has always been an aspirational type of brand. They are at the top of their game, and their service is incredibly polished,” says Matthew. “We already had a HOMAG edgebander and a DRILLTEQ V-200, both fantastic machines. So we had basically no hesitation turning to HOMAG for a beam saw.”

With space at a premium in the workshop, selecting the right model was crucial. “We took a steer from Simon Durant, our HOMAG Account Manager, who clearly understood our requirements. The S-200 emerged as a clear choice, as it’s a space-saving beam saw that has tremendous capability.”

Smooth transition to advanced technology

Despite the step up in technology, installation and onboarding proved straightforward. “Installation went well; there were a couple of minor challenges with our workshop that HOMAG dealt with efficiently.”

While there was an initial learning curve, the combination of training and ongoing support ensured a smooth transition.

“Our saw operator had used beam saws before, but that was 16 years ago … technology has come a long way since then! This wasn’t an issue in the end, as the training was thorough and got him up to speed.

“Once you’re familiar with the basics, it’s really a case of learning by doing. This works largely thanks to HOMAG’s excellent telephone support. They always get back to you promptly with the answers and guidance you need.”

Faster production, higher quality

Since installation, the impact on production has been immediate. “The S-200 has sped up the primary process of sizing our panels, and we’ve improved the quality of the cuts,” says Matthew.

“As skilled as our operator was with the manual saw, the quality and consistency he can achieve with the S-200 is simply far superior. It’s an entirely different level.”

The efficiency gains have also had a positive impact on distribution of labour. “We now require just one operator on the beam saw, and he is able to complete his primary task so quickly that it has freed him up to take on other duties.”

Connected production with smartWOP

A key benefit of the investment has been the integration between machines, enabled by smartWOP software.

“The smartWOP software integrates very well with the saw and also with our DRILLTEQ, which helps to consolidate our entire operation under one umbrella,” Matthew explains. “That’s been a huge benefit.”

Unlocking future growth

Beyond immediate efficiency gains, the investment is already creating new opportunities for the business.

“The S-200 has increased our capacity substantially, opening up new avenues for growth,” says Matthew. “If we continue on this trajectory, we’ll probably be taking on a new member of staff in the near future. It’s an exciting time for us.”

A partnership built on service

Alongside the performance of the machinery, HOMAG’s support has played a key role in the project’s success.

“I can’t speak highly enough of HOMAG UK. Everyone we deal with is friendly and totally on the ball. They’re a highly professional bunch of individuals who clearly prioritise great customer service.”

Matthew concludes, “We’re thrilled with the investment and look forward to seeing where our continued partnership with HOMAG takes us in the future.”
