When specialist firm, RT Joinery, planned its move to a new, larger premises in Great Stukeley, managing wood waste efficiently and safely was a top priority.
With 14 high-performance machines – including a CNC, a four-head moulder, and various saws – the company needed a robust extraction system and wood waste storage system that could keep pace with its production and ensure full COSHH compliance.
RT Joinery selected Dustraction’s comprehensive proposal for a fully automated system, which included the Dustrax 6 Section No 27 RV Modular Filter and a new Wood Waste Technology Silo heater. This 6-section modular filter boasts 162m² of anti-static polyester needle felt filter media. The automatic shaker mechanism activates on shutdown, dislodging waste from the 108 filter tubes to maintain optimal performance and ensure long filter life.
The system is engineered to handle an air volume of approximately 5.6m³/sec, drawing waste from a combination of machines operating at any one time. Crucially, the design includes ATEX-compliant explosion relief panels and non-return valves. This ATEX-compliant design is a non-negotiable part of our ‘Health & Safety First’ value, mitigating dust explosion risks and protecting the staff and facility.
What sets this installation apart is the fully integrated waste handling. Instead of simply collecting dust in bags, the system uses a heavy-duty rotary valve and a dedicated 11kW waste transfer loop. This loop conveys all waste material directly into the new Wood Waste Technology Silo provided by Dustraction, creating a seamless process that turns waste into a valuable resource for heating. This automated loop drastically reduces manual handling and downtime, allowing the team to focus on production.
“Moving to a new facility gave us the chance to get our entire waste system right from day one,” says Richard Todd, owner of RT Joinery. “The Dustraction team understood our complete machine line-up. The installation and commissioning process for the entire system, including the new silo and heater, is underway. Having one partnership for both the extraction and the silo and heater makes perfect sense, and we are excited to get it fully operational.
“We are proud to partner with RT Joinery,” adds Stephen Duncombe, MD of Dustraction. “This project perfectly showcases our core strength: delivering bespoke, high-quality engineering that solves real-world challenges. This system isn’t just about dust collection; it’s about providing a complete, integrated waste management solution. It’s a reliable, safe, and sustainable production environment that will support their business for decades to come.”
