Ateliers Mécaniques de Fegersheim is a long established manufacturer of heavy duty woodworking machines built using the proven material of cast iron. The original company – Tornos Plants of Illkirch-Strasbourg – was formed in 1920 and specialised in the manufacture of grey iron casting, and from 1923 the firm developed its own range of woodworking machines.
In 1967, the company ceased the manufacture of castings and moved to its present site under the new name of Ateliers Mécaniques de Fegersheim and concentrated on the manufacture and supply of woodworking machines under the marketing names of UTIS.
The new, high technology machine designs from UTIS –which included surface planers, thichnessers and spindle moulders – still utilses the special properties of cast iron for the bodies and tables of the full range of machines.
An example of the type of machine now made by UTIS today is the exceptionally large capacity R80 thicknesser which has a planing width of 830mm and 300mm thickness capacity.
The table height setting is selected by entering the dimension required into the dial-a-size controller conveniently sited at the operators’ position and the table will automatically adjust to the new setting.
Both infeed and outfeed rollers are steel giving a very long service life, the infeed roller is sectional and is paired to a cast iron sectional pressure bar. The table is fitted with two anti-friction adjustable bed rollers and has the option of an extended outfeed table to assist with very heavy timber components. The thicknesser range also include 700mm,600mm and 500mm wide machines all constructed using this remarkable and proven material cast iron and fitted with the most advanced technology available.
