Panel Production Machinery builds confidence through engineering expertise

Professional Woodworking Expo proved to be a valuable platform for Panel Production Machinery (PPM), with Managing Director Symon Eyre reflecting on three productive days that exceeded expectations and reinforced the company’s growing reputation as a trusted engineering partner for manufacturers investing in new machinery.

While the woodworking element of the exhibition was relatively compact, the quality of conversations more than justified the company’s presence, attracting interest from existing customers, new timber manufacturers and visitors crossing over from the neighbouring InstallerSHOW.

“I didn’t really expect many manufacturers down here with how small the woodworking exhibition is,” admitted Symon. “But we’ve had plenty of interest from timber companies, regular customers have come to see us, and we’ve taken around 25 good enquiries over the three days.”

Importantly, the objective was never to leave Birmingham with a book full of signed orders. “We’re not here to make sales,” he explained. “We’re here for brand recognition and lead generation. From that point of view, it’s been a successful exhibition.”

Those conversations also highlighted changing attitudes across the woodworking sector, with more businesses exploring investment in their own manufacturing capability and looking for trusted partners to help guide increasingly complex purchasing decisions.

Beyond supplying machinery

Throughout the discussion, one message became increasingly clear: Panel Production Machinery sees its role as far more than supplying equipment. Instead, the business is focused on delivering complete manufacturing solutions, working with reputable machinery manufacturers and experienced engineers to help customers specify, install and support production systems that genuinely meet their operational needs. That approach is becoming increasingly important as more manufacturers consider sourcing machinery from overseas.

“People are understanding that China is now the place to go for machines,” said Symon. “But it’s really who and where you buy them from.” Rather than questioning the quality of modern Chinese manufacturing, Symon believes the real value lies in the engineering expertise that sits between the factory and the customer.

Correct specification, commissioning, operator training and ongoing technical support ultimately determine whether a machinery investment delivers the productivity and return on investment manufacturers expect.

The company’s growing focus on turnkey solutions reflects that philosophy, bringing together machinery, engineering expertise and project management into a single package designed to reduce risk and give customers confidence throughout the investment process.

Investing in engineering

Supporting that strategy is continued investment in people. Symon explained that the company is strengthening its engineering capability by bringing together experienced industry professionals with newer talent, creating a team capable of supporting customers throughout the entire lifecycle of their machinery. “There aren’t many engineers in the country,” he observed. “When you’re buying a machine, you’re turning up to that machine every day. You need somebody who can look after it and make sure it keeps working.”

It is a straightforward observation, but one that increasingly resonates with manufacturers operating under constant production pressure. Reliable engineering support, rapid technical assistance and practical experience have become every bit as important as the machine itself. Several experienced engineers have recently joined the business, strengthening both its technical knowledge and customer support capability while reflecting growing confidence in the company’s long-term direction.

A permanent home for demonstrations

Looking ahead, PPM is planning to establish a dedicated showroom and demonstration facility in Derby. Far more than simply a display area, the new premises will provide working machinery, stock, spare parts and a venue for customer demonstrations, technical open days and product evaluations.

Symon believes seeing equipment operating under real production conditions remains one of the most effective ways for customers to make informed investment decisions. “People really will buy a machine once they’ve seen it.”

The new facility will also reinforce the company’s commitment to providing long-term support, creating a central hub where customers can experience machinery, discuss production challenges and access engineering expertise under one roof.

Looking ahead

Despite ongoing economic pressures, Symon remains optimistic about opportunities within the manufacturing sector.

He believes many smaller and medium-sized businesses are increasingly seeking practical, cost-effective automation solutions that allow them to remain competitive without the capital investment traditionally associated with premium European machinery. PWE reflected that changing market. Conversations were less about individual machines and increasingly centred on engineering support, process understanding and finding reliable partners capable of delivering complete manufacturing solutions.

As Panel Production Machinery continues to expand its engineering capability, develop turnkey solutions and invest in its future demonstration facilities, the company is firmly on the front foot – helping manufacturers invest with confidence while ensuring every machine is backed by the technical expertise needed to deliver long-term productivity and performance.
