Developing from a single-person operation to a successful and dynamic business takes considerable effort and commitment. It requires self-belief and experience at least, along with fundamentals such as the wherewithal to invest in the appropriate stock and equipment, but perhaps more importantly, to co-ordinate a capable and industrious team with the necessary energy with which to make progress and create a successful business. Camco is proving to be one such business, supplying and manufacturing edgebanding from its new facility in Northern Ireland to businesses across the UK and Ireland.
Pulling up to the smart Camco facility – one of a quiet cluster of modern industrial units on the outskirts of Crossgar, just south of Belfast – I hoped the unassuming but professional exterior would lead to something more exciting than the average edgebanding supply shop within. First impressions were verygood indeed. I could immediately see things were well organised; the whole place had a good feel.
Over a welcome coffee, I sat down to talk with David and Olivia Phillips to discuss the state of the business and
its ethos. Serving as an early insight into the open-minded and team-oriented management style of David and Olivia was the very boardroom table we were sat around – naturally enough the boardroom table is where meetings with clients and staff take place, but it also doubles down to an impressive break time pool table, and topping that on Fridays it’s where the pizza club meets following a successful week’s efforts!
I’m already engaged with the Camco ethos of hard work in a pleasing team-oriented environment. Beyond the offices and bordering the warehouse area is a rationally laid out and well co-ordinated despatching area.
Positioned to the far end beyond the extensive and very neatly organised highbay racking sits three semi-automatic slitting and rewinding machines which play a critical role in elevating the service which Camco provides.
In addition to the wide range of stocked edgebanding – which was in excess of 3,000,000m at the time of my visit – these machines enable Camco to provide a critical service which many of its customers find invaluable. Much of what edgeband customers require is part and parcel of the standard in-stock offer, available at all times off the shelf – but when customers have a more individual requirement, Camco responds positively, having invested in a spread of technology, expertise and personnel to seamlessly provide specific edging options, in specific widths and lengths in-house without pressure or undue delay. This makes Camco a distinguished proposition among its peer group.
Another way that Camco stands out is with its consulting services. Calling in the company’s extensive experience in this sector, Camco delivers a specialist, flexible service to help customers overcome technical and specification issues, undertaken at the customers’ premises.
This proactive and customer-oriented thinking helps Camco stand out among edgebanding suppliers in that it can produce bespoke solutions to order onsite and on-demand, providing customers with what they need, when and how they require it. And when a client needs insight and clarification on edging matters, Camco is there ready to help and advise.
Another way in which Camco’s service ethos is spot on is with its Edgeband Finder service on its website. Simply enter the board manufacturer and associated board number, or simply enter the decor reference number, and appropriate matching edgebands are identified. In terms of the company’s product range, Camco’s edgebanding offering includes Veneer, ABS, Acrylic, Paintable, Melamine and Laser options sourced from the world’s leading manufacturers.
Veneer edging
Veneer edging is produced using high-grade European manufactured veneer from a wide range of local and foreign tree species, as well as fine-line veneers of various thicknesses and widths, supplied in rolls or in strips, pre-glued or un-glued, fleece-backed, sanded – and on request also brushed and lacquered. For customers looking for Lacquered Veneer edging, Camco can match perfectly to customers’ required colour and sheen grade. For example, should a higher sheen grade for the edging be required to emphasise the edging, Camco will produce and supply that to specific requirements.
ABS edging
In terms of its ABS edging offering, Camco offers a vast selection of products in different patterns, thicknesses and width sizes. Currently, the offer comprises around 4000 colours and patterns of 300 kinds of ABS edgebanding tapes, 80 kinds of melamine edgebanding tapes, 40 kinds of CPL edgebanding tapes used on worktops, and 35 kinds of edgebanding tapes made of natural veneer.
Acrylic edging
The innovative and impressive 3D appearance when using Acrylic edgebanding can help create more exclusivity in design terms with the potential to increase the value of the finished product. Acrylic edgebanding tapes, also known as 3D edgebanding tapes, are available in stock with thicknesses of 1mm and 2mm in various combinations of the colour of aluminium and solid colour shades. Camco’s Acrylic edgebanding tapes are also available to order in other solid colour and wood grain designs and imitation end grain.
Melamine edging
Thanks to the innate ease of forming melamine edging around curved boards, these edgebanding tapes are ideal for curvatures on all kinds of panel-based production using CNC edgebanding processing machines. Not only is it suitable for edgebanding of grooves on door leaves, but also for the softforming and wrapping of MDF profiles.
PP edgebanding tapes with a thickness from 0.38mm to 2mm are available to order in solid colour and wood grain designs.
Paintable edging
For furniture manufacturers, Camco offers edgebanding tapes for painting intended for edgebanding and subsequent varnishing. Within its range, the company has melamine and ABS edgebanding tapes for painting and dedicated edgebanding tape for painting, PPWood.
Edgebanding tapes for painting are available in various thicknesses and widths and are intended for lacquering with PUR as well as water-based lacquers.
Laser edging
Laser edgebanding tapes are a new generation of tapes with a useful layer applied on the back side of the edgebanding tape intended for laser edgebanding, as well as hot air or other technologies without using hot glue.
The advantages of the laser edgebanding tapes are the concealed adhesive bond, the strong bond with high-temperature resistance and high moisture resistance. AirMelt and LaserMelt laser edgebanding tapes from Camco’s own production are available in all types of edgebanding tapes from the collection, ABS and melamine edgebanding tapes and edge veneers.
For businesses with varied, and at times bespoke, requirements, Camco has to be recommended as a manufacturer and supplier of a full range of options and a well-drilled service provider well used to operating across the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
