Building confidence across the timber supply chain

For manufacturers in the furniture and joinery sector, timber is far more than a raw material. Product performance, consistency, compliance and sustainability all begin with confidence in the supply chain. That is where Timber Development UK is playing an increasingly important role.

As the UK’s largest membership organisation for the timber supply chain, Timber Development UK (TDUK) brings together more than 1,000 businesses spanning importers, distributors, merchants, manufacturers, agents, sawmills and specialist suppliers.

Collectively, our members supply an enormous range of timber and timber-based products, from structural softwoods and hardwoods to plywood, MDF, particleboard, OSB, decorative panels, veneers and engineered wood products. TDUK’s role is to support these businesses with technical guidance, market intelligence, education, advocacy and best practice while promoting the responsible use of wood throughout the UK economy.

Over the past year, TDUK has continued to expand its technical resources, market reporting, webinars, training and industry events, helping businesses respond to changing legislation, evolving product standards and growing sustainability expectations. Through initiatives such as our new Wood Campus online training platform, professionals across the supply chain can access high-quality learning that builds confidence in specifying, purchasing and working with timber products.

For furniture and joinery manufacturers, understanding the features and benefits of the timber products they choose has never been more valuable. Modern manufacturing relies on an increasingly diverse range of wood panels and engineered products sourced from around the world. While this offers greater choice and performance for the user, it also makes product knowledge more important. Manufacturers need confidence that the materials they buy are correctly specified, meet all relevant timber regulations, have been accurately described and are suitable for their intended application. Selecting the right panel product is about much more than appearance – performance characteristics, durability, certification and regulatory compliance all matter.

This is why TDUK’s Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP) has become such a valuable framework. All TDUK members agree to comply with our RPP, which means customers can buy from a TDUK member and provide reassurance that the timber products they are buying come from organisations committed to legal sourcing, transparent supply chains and products that are fit for purpose.

The RPP has three main areas of focus:

Responsible sourcing – helping members comply with the UK Timber Regulation (UKTR) and demonstrate that the timber they buy and sell comes from legal, responsibly managed sources. Members receive guidance, training and, where applicable, independent audits of their due diligence systems.

Product quality – helping suppliers make certain products are accurately described, properly specified and fit for their intended purpose. This has become increasingly significant with evolving product regulations, the Building Safety Act and the expectations set out in the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI).

Carbon reporting – providing members with tools and guidance to measure, report and reduce their carbon emissions in line with the timber industry’s Net Zero Roadmap.

Whether you are looking to strengthen your business through full membership or simply want access to trusted technical resources and the latest industry news, TDUK offers a straightforward starting point.
