Celebrating 10 years of James Wellesley

2026 marks the tenth anniversary of James Wellesley – a significant milestone for a firm steadily rising in the high-end joinery sector. Here, we explore how it has become a trusted name in bespoke joinery.

Based in the Home Counties and led by managing director, Christian Lawson, James Wellesley specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of bespoke interior joinery for some of the UK’s most prestigious private residences and commercial environments.

Its client base spans architects, interior designers, developers, main contractors, and private individuals seeking truly tailored solutions, with a portfolio that encompasses everything from home cinemas and dressing rooms to kitchens, libraries, and statement commercial bars. “No project is too complex or too detailed — our scale and infrastructure allow us to deliver highly intricate schemes with confidence,” explains Christian.

“Operating from a substantial manufacturing facility, we combine advanced machinery with traditional bench skills. Our capacity enables us to fabricate large, complex elements off-site — often delivering fully assembled pieces to minimise risk, ensure quality control and streamline installation.”

Originally from New Zealand, Christian has been based in the UK for 20 years now, and brings a strong background in business within the built environment. “I joined James Wellesley five years ago, and during that time we have significantly expanded both our technical capabilities and our team of highly skilled craftspeople,” Christian enthuses. “It is an exciting time to be part of a British craft-led business operating at the very top end of the market.”

Craftsmanship, supported by technology

At the heart of James Wellesley’s success is its multi-generational team of craftspeople, whose expertise ensures that every detail is considered and meticulously crafted. “Investment in people is fundamental to our success,” Christian affirms. “We employ a team of more than 30 specialists, several of whom have been with us since the company’s inception. Continuous training, clear progression pathways and a culture that values craftsmanship help us retain and develop talent.

“By fostering long-term careers rather than short-term roles, we maintain consistency in both quality and expertise.” This people-first approach is complemented by cutting-edge technology. James Wellesley’s Home Counties workshop spans over 20,000 sq ft and features advanced 3D parametric design software, full CNC capability, specialist machining and assembly areas, as well as advanced spray booths and finishing rooms and liquid metal and specialist surface finishing. “This infrastructure enables us to manufacture, pre-assemble and test complex joinery elements prior to delivery,” Christian notes. “Pre-assembly of all joinery items significantly reduces risk on-site and ensures seamless project execution.”

Collaboration from conception to completion

James Wellesley’s position at the forefront of the UK’s high-end joinery sector is underpinned by its collaborative ethos. Clients and design partners are actively encouraged to engage with the process from the earliest stages, including visiting the workshop to gain a deeper understanding of production and materials.

The design and development stage is particularly critical. Using advanced parametric CAD technology, James Wellesley produces highly detailed drawings for each individual element, while presenting a range of material and finish options to support informed decision-making.

This collaborative approach continues throughout the manufacturing process, with regular client visits welcomed. Once complete, James Wellesley’s dedicated installation team ensures a smooth transition from workshop to site, supported by careful planning and ongoing coordination.

Proactive problem solving

Within the luxury sector, complexity and coordination are inevitable challenges. Tight timelines, evolving specifications and multi-disciplinary teams can introduce risk, but James Wellesley mitigates this through a structured and proactive approach.

“Our in-house expertise and structured workflow ensure that issues are resolved long before they reach site,” explains Christian. This includes early-stage coordination through design workshops, comprehensive technical drawings and precise surveys, joinery item templates to aid site works, prototyping of complex details, clear communication with design and contractor teams, and rigorous quality control throughout both manufacture and installation.

Notable projects

A recent example of James Wellesley’s talent is the full townhouse scheme in Kensington it has completed for interior designer Paolo Moschino. The firm delivered bespoke joinery throughout the property — from fitted wardrobe façades and walk-in dressing rooms to a kitchen seamlessly integrated with an ornate ceiling. It was a project built on bespoke joinery and transformed a bland space into a jewel box interior.

“Looking ahead, we are proud to be collaborating with Elicyon and Lalique on a high-end bar installation for WOW! House at the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour,” says Christian. “The project showcases the full breadth of our joinery capability within a hospitality setting and coincides with our 10th anniversary celebrations.

“We would welcome industry colleagues to visit the installation or our workshop to experience our capabilities first-hand.”

As James Wellesley celebrates its tenth anniversary, the company stands as a testament to what can be achieved through a careful balance of craftsmanship, innovation, and collaboration. With a growing portfolio of prestigious projects and continued investment in both people and technology, it looks ahead with confidence – well positioned to deliver exceptional joinery solutions that meet the evolving demands of the luxury interior sector.
