Based in Trawden in Lancashire, VWM Woodworking Machinery has experience of working with CNC machinery since 1998. Initially, the company found success retrofitting old Rye and Wadkin machines with new control systems to bring them up to date with modern control systems. Today, the business is a successful machinery service and supply business with a strong group of quality brands with solutions for all applications.
VWM supplies a wealth of different customers with its range of CNC machines – many are in the aerospace, non-ferrous metal industry, vehicle construction, plastics industry, with many of course in the wood-based industry. The company has an excellent range of Technos CNC machines are available from our stock – the Start Series is an entry-level machine aimed at the user and is a great option for those getting started with CNC; the ECO Series, a VWM best seller, is the real workhorse of the range is available in different bed sizes; the company’s MD Series is also becoming a strong selling choice, and it is offered with different head- and bed-configuration.
For those needing a higher specification options, VWM’s HD Series is fully flexible in that it can be manufactured to suit sawing units to cut 200mm deep with bed sizes up to 14m and bigger, with four tool changes giving an impressive 36 tools in total, plus automatic load/off-loading and five-axis applications.
In terms of availability, VWM sales director Jason Verey says: “The current lead times for machines are very good … we keep our Technos ECO Series in stock in three bed sizes of 8 x 4ft, 10 x 5ft as well as 2100 x 3200mm for jumbo Egger sheets. We also offer full service back-up on all our machines with many customers taking out service plans on the machines to keeping them in optimum working order.
“Our engineers have a very thorough knowledge on CNC machines which we brought to our Technos machines to develop them into one of the best-selling machines in the UK. The benefits of investing in CNC technology such as the Technos Series from VWM is fairly clear, but worth repeating. The key advantages CNC holds over traditional machines is they are fully-automated giving constant accuracy and a reliability of production output, in a word, consistency. The machining time is accurate and via the software provides clear timing scenarios allowing manufacturers to accurately quote jobs – and of course, CNC don’t require tea breaks or call in sick!
“The performance expected from any of our CNC range is very high,” says Jason, “as they are all very high accuracy machines proven by the fact that we supply these into aerospace industry which have very high tolerances on all their products, and they also demand repeatability on these as well.
“Other elements to look at when purchasing a CNC should be the software … our machines are geared to work with any software on the market, this is evidenced by the fact that we numerous machines in the field working successfully with many different software brands.
“Another key element should be the construction and fabrication of the machinery itself – a scenario where our Technos range wins hands down! We have well over 170 successful installs since 2003 out in the field in the UK.
“To evidence this, a couple of customers that spring to mind, the first being a pallet manufacturer who developed a flat-pack case for exporting goods. He was manufacturing this the old way with overhead pin routers and jigs and this was a very time-consuming job, now on the CNC, what took them four hours to cut and make is completed in 20 minutes.
"The other, is a customer of ours who make refrigerated vehicles, they first came to us as they were using hand saws to cut very large panels of up to 10m long by 3m wide! Over the last six years we have now supplied them with seven CNC machines, two of which have beds of 14 x 3m and this output has helped make them into one of Europe’s biggest refrigerated vehicle manufacturers.”
