Minimising costs whilst edgebanding with high-performance tooling from Leitz

In today’s furniture & joinery manufacturing landscape, UK businesses face escalating costs across the board, from raw materials and energy to labour and subsequent finishing operations. The squeeze on profitability is making it more critical than ever to optimise every stage of production. For those involved in edgebanding, the need is clear: achieving a flawless finish first time, whilst driving down cycle times and associated costs. High-performance tools manufactured by Leitz Tooling can allow manufacturers to increase productivity and finish quality and eliminate costly second operations.

The Diamaster WhisperCut system from Leitz is a diamond-tipped joining and rebating cutterhead designed for CNC & edgebanding machinery. The system, engineered for finish cut quality and cost efficiency, is manufactured from lightweight metal alloys and employs an innovative tool geometry.

Due to its optimised tool body shape and low weight, noise pollution during jointing and rebating is significantly reduced by 5 dB(A). These reduced vibrations improve accuracy and finish quality when machining.

The Diamaster WhisperCut is also available in “Edge Expert” style. EdgeExpert tooling from Leitz cuts at the optimal cutting angle for high-quality finishes. Through extensive research, the EdgeExpert cutting angle was determined to be optimal, surpassing the performance of higher shear tools (70°).

The EdgeExpert’s unique tooth geometry delivers clean, tear-free edges and smooth sides, even on challenging laminated or dense materials. Notably, these tools boast a 30% increase in lifespan when cutting laminates compared to standard solutions, and offer a 50% reduction in sharpening costs compared to similar tools with a 70° shear angle.

Another major cost centre when edgebanding is frequent tool changes and excessive stocking of exchangeable tools. Producing high-quality furniture panels presents a significant economic challenge due to the diverse materials and sizes involved. Jointing mixed panels leads to accelerated tool wear, particularly in the tool’s surface layers, resulting in diminished machining quality. The Leitz Adjustable jointing cutter was engineered to face these manufacturing challenges and reduce downtime between operations.

With an increased tool life of 10x thanks to high-grade diamond tips, this jointing cutter allows manufacturers to adjust cutting widths between operations – even whilst the tool is still mounted on machinery. This can reduce set-up costs by up to 60% and eliminate downtime from tool changes. The Edge Expert geometry provides superior finish quality and significantly reduces tear-out, further reducing the need for second operations.

The dual challenges of fluctuating batch sizes and an ever-expanding array of carrier and decorative materials in panel production have massive impacts on manufacturing costs. For high-volume producers, manufacturers looking for better cost efficiency and those handling diverse material grades and decorative elements, the Leitz DT Premium compact hogger offers a powerful solution.

Engineered for reuse and sustainability, the compact hogger significantly boosts productivity through its extended lifespan, consistently delivering perfect edge and surface quality. Machinists can see up to a 20% reduction in machining costs, as the high-grade diamond tips and long tool life ensure a low cost per running metre. The cost-efficiency is also spread across the tool’s life cycle as it can be sharpened up to 15 times, maintaining a constant cutting width over the entire life cycle.

Suitable for all panel materials, the DT Premium compact hogger achieves excellent edge quality and smooth cutting surfaces. Built-in chip breakers and recesses support efficient chip removal and a vibration-dampening body further enhances longevity and economic efficiency through noise and vibration reduction. To support these high-quality solutions, Leitz also sells premium end trim sawblades for single or double-sided edgebanding machines and double-end tenoners. Although only used in short intervals, end trim sawblades generate intensely loud and damaging noise. These Leitz sawblades are engineered to reduce noise when machining. Engineered for multiple applications, Leitz end trim saw blades provide high-quality end trim cuts for solid wood and panels with veneered, melamine or plastic edging. Thanks to tooth geometries and pitch designed for optimum cutting quality at no cost the tool life.

To reduce production costs and enhance efficiency, consider reaching out to Leitz Tooling for high-performance tools and dependable sharpening services. With eight service centres located throughout the UK, Leitz is well-equipped to support the growth of your company.
