R J Binnie Ltd has been supplying the furniture trade for the last 32 years. Founded by the Managing Director, Richard Binnie in 1994, the company started life as a manufacturer of industrial sewing threads.
Based in Leicester, then the traditional centre of the country’s sewing thread industry, it focused away from clothing manufacturers, and instead produced high-quality corespun threads. Over the following years, it became one of the leading sewing thread suppliers to upholstery and mattress manufacturers in the UK.
As the company became more established, it was asked by customers to supply other related products, like zip, hook & loop and piping cord. A few extra products soon became a full range of furniture components. The company's latest catalogue shows a comprehensive range of products including sofabed mechanisms, springs, wooden & metal feet, recliner mechanisms, FR fabrics, furniture hardware and webbing.
Over the years, R J Binnie has become the industry’s one-stop shop for furniture components, with comprehensive stocks and a national van delivery service that allows customers the confidence that their production won’t be held up. Deliveries are usually from stock and are sent either next day or as required by the customer.
Core to the company’s ethos is customer service. R J Binnie believes that it is an extension of its customer’s warehouse and works closely with these customers to understand what requirements they will have, and when they will need them. Good communication is the key to success and R J Binnie believes that this is its strength. Problems identified early can usually be solved.
Over the last few years, the furniture trade has encountered many challenges with COVID, lockdowns, raw material shortages and inflation and more recently tough economic conditions. R J Binnie has worked with and supported its customers, through all of these problems and looks forward to improving UK furniture sales going into 2026. The Operations Manager, Susan Smith, remarks, “We have all had to become experts in crisis management over the last few years. You have to be prepared to have a flexible business model and learn to adapt to changing market conditions”.
Whilst sewing thread is still a key part of the business, R J Binnie has become known as a key supplier of the innovative MotionItalia recliner mechanisms, as well as Linkrest sofabed mechanisms. With an on-site assembly department, it is able to supply a wide range of high-quality mechanisms in a variety of sizes. The company has recently added massage and heat systems to the range in order to offer the complete package to customers.
Product development is another vitally important area for the company. R J Binnie is constantly looking for new furniture leg designs to inspire its customers and is pleased to produce bespoke products.
With existing products, the company is always researching ways to supply quality products at more competitive prices. The company is very aware of the need to reduce packaging waste and use recycled raw materials. An increasing number of its products are recycled, recyclable and from sustainable sources. It is able and experienced in working with customers' compliance requirements. All products are ethically sourced, with factories audited and monitored.
