For lighter and more stable furniture elements
Reactive PUR hotmelts make the continuous production of lightweight panels possible. Kleiberit products allow for line speeds of up to 40m/min. The application can take place with a roller applicator or slot nozzle. Besides this, high strength, cross linking PUR adhesives don’t bring water into humidity sensitive systems made from wood and paper products.
Kleiberit has also developed special solutions for lightweight panels without frames. Kleiberit adhesives can be used in concealed edge technology to close open edges with flexible, thin edges, allowing furniture manufacturers to process with their own machinery.
In addition, precisely localised strengthening with an innovative dowel filled with PUR adhesive is the basis for the secure fastening of hardware fittings.
Due to the results of trials conducted with industry partners at the Institute for Wood Technology in Dresden, Kleiberit is confident that this development will pave the way for thinner surface layers, wider mesh cores, and more flexible structures. Kleiberit is not only an adhesive supplier but also a partner in technology, offering producers and processors complete solutions for inline production of lightweight panels.
Will lightweight become a ‘heavy boulder’?
According to Kleiberit, the question of whether lightweight panels have a future or not has been answered a long time ago and need not be repeated. The company has been assured that the market has answered with a clear “yes, I want it”! The only question which remains as far as the company is concerned, is which materials should be used in order to enable optimal function under economical conditions. In addition, there are new materials and material combinations on a nearly weekly basis. Well-known and simple water-based systems are increasingly reaching their limits and are practically a discontinued model.
For many people, Kleiberit believes, this ‘sits like a heavy boulder in the stomach’. Polyurethane hotmelt adhesives have been in the market as an alternative, and took over water-based systems long ago. However, even these adhesives can’t fulfil every criterium in terms of finding one adhesive for all requirements. This is particularly prominent when it comes to whether HDF panels should be bonded to paper honeycomb core in a flat lamination process or wafer-thin high gloss foils on MDF boards, when more and more specialised polyurethane high performance adhesives are being used.
One must have extremely high initial strength against memory force of the materials, while the other one can be more subdued. Namely, it should ensure an extremely smooth and mirror-like surface. As a user, it is recommended to get adhesive experts on board from the very beginning.
Development experts and technicians from Klebchemie have been deeply involved with machine manufacturers, as well as renowned users since the beginning of this bonding technology. Whether for sandwich doors, furniture panels or building components, all challenges could be fulfilled with top marks with worldwide leading products from the PUR hotmelt product line 706 for flat lamination.
The youngest member in this group is Kleiberit PUR 706.7. It boasts unrivalled roller stability, absolutely string-free application and strength values which were previously only known with screw assembly.
If high gloss surfaces should be produced with sensitive foils on lightweight panels, then products from the Kleiberit 709 are used. Having been field-tested for years, a smooth application with this product line is a given, and avoids overkill of the wafer-thin foils which are always becoming thinner and more sensitive.
For edgebanding, the premium products from the Kleiberit 709 series are available. Kleiberit PUR 707.9 is considered to be an outstanding product. Even ‘null joint’ is achievable, and line speeds reach the three figure area.
For assembling fittings in the ‘nothing of honeycomb’, Kleiberit PUR 702.2 is established. If the user prefers a cold system, then Kleiberit 2 Component PUR 573.1/573.2 is the right choice, as these bonds hold no matter what comes.
Should the ‘nothing’ be lightly and uniformly filled before edgebanding or fitting assembly for surfaces such as compact substrates, Klebchemie has the answer: Kleiberit 2C PUR 576.1/576.2.
