Iridium expansion leads to more choice and less downtime

Mirka’s premium Iridium™ abrasive range is expanding with a wider range of grits and a series of technical upgrades designed to provide fast cutting performance when used on fillers, primers and wood surfaces.

The upgrade delivers a high-quality surface finish, reduces process times and increases productivity, as the abrasive cuts faster to reduce process time by up to 15%. The abrasives are also designed to be hard-wearing, so there is less tool downtime, enabling users to focus on different phases of work without worrying about which abrasive they will need next.

The paper-backed discs are hard-wearing and provide consistent performance thanks to a new ceramic grain technology. The technology includes improved grain distribution and optimised grain orientation, updated top-coat resin and enhanced anti-clogging properties, enabling faster, sharper cuts and longer-lasting performance.

In addition, there is also a focus on environmental sustainability, as the energy needed to produce the abrasives is reduced by up to 90% compared to conventional production technology. Another aspect of sustainability is that being efficient reduces waste and optimises material usage.

The upgraded Iridium range now provides a complete grit range from the ultra-coarse 40 grit and goes up to the 1200, 1500, 2000, 2500 ultra-fine grits. The addition of the ultra-fine grits is an asset to businesses in the woodworking sector, as they ensure users have an abrasive that helps provide a highly polished finished surface. In addition, the breadth of the Iridium range means businesses have access to a premium abrasive range that can cover the complete process. The range continues to be offered in discs, rolls, sheets, and strips, with the addition of perforated rolls, its coarse and fine grits allow the abrasive to work well on both soft and hard surfaces, while its flexible backing also offers excellent grain adhesion and no loss of the grains, even when folded.

To complement the performance of the new Iridium abrasive, a double anti-clogging construction allows the grains to be combined with a dual dust-repellent surface treatment. This helps reduce clogging and maintains a consistent cutting performance throughout the life of the abrasive and is an asset for users when they use the abrasive on soft wood applications.

“In the woodworking sector, abrasives are the lifeblood of the production process, so it is important that businesses have access to a complete solution,” says Neil Newbrook, business sector manager, Wood, Mirka UK.

“We see Iridium as an abrasive that is a premium option for users who prioritise productivity, consistent performance, and superior finish quality. In addition, the breadth of the range, from coarse to fine grits, ensures there is something for every application and means users can easily switch applications without missing a beat, so they can spend more time focusing on the process.”
