Masterwood – CNC technology driven by application

Masterwood GB supplies CNC machinery designed for consistent performance in real workshop environments across the UK and Ireland. Led by experienced directors Chris Alexander and David Kennard, the business works closely with joinery manufacturers to ensure CNC investment is driven by genuine production requirements rather than unnecessary complexity.

This approach is reflected in the structure of the Masterwood CNC range. The portfolio spans three-, four-, and five-axis machining centres, allowing manufacturers to select machinery aligned to both current workloads and longer-term growth. Supported by a nationwide team of experienced service technicians, Masterwood GB provides full coverage for installation, routine servicing, repairs, and breakdown support across the UK and Ireland.

Three-axis machines are commonly specified by workshops taking their first step into CNC. These machines offer a clear step up from traditional joinery equipment, delivering improved accuracy, repeatability, and throughput while remaining relatively straightforward to programme and operate. For many manufacturers, they provide an effective entry point into CNC production without disrupting established workflows.

Four-axis machining centres form the backbone of the Masterwood range and are widely used in bespoke and architectural joinery environments. By enabling multiple faces of a component to be machined in a single setup, these machines reduce handling, improve consistency, and shorten production times. Typical applications include curved components, doors, windows, and shaped joinery, where precision and efficiency are equally important.

For manufacturers producing more complex geometries, Masterwood also offers five-axis CNC solutions. These machines provide full freedom of movement for advanced shaping and sculpted components. However, Masterwood GB places strong emphasis on correct machine selection, often advising customers where a four-axis solution will deliver higher utilisation, lower capital cost, and a faster return on investment.

This consultative approach is demonstrated in the recent South Wood Manufacturers case study. Based in Cork, South Wood invested in a Masterwood Project 470 four-axis CNC to support increasing demand for staircase production. After assessing machines from multiple suppliers, the company selected Masterwood based on the quality of technical advice and machine demonstrations.

Rather than recommending a five-axis model, Masterwood advised that the Project 470 was better suited to the company’s production mix.

Since installation, South Wood has nearly doubled its staircase output, while improving machining accuracy and reducing lead times. With a projected payback period of two to three years, the investment highlights how well-specified CNC machinery, supported by structured training and responsive aftersales support, can deliver tangible gains in productivity and competitiveness.
