Roger Oates Design is the proud custodian of Solidwool, a Devon-based brand which has developed a fascinating composite material from Herdwick wool.
Despite its special qualities, Herdwick wool has lost its perceived value over time, and is today considered one of the lowest value wools in the UK. With the ambition of giving this underated material a new lease of life, Solidwool combines the wool with a bio resin as part of a unique manufacturing process.
The result is a strong and aesthetically-striking material; a dark grey composite with the lighter guard hairs creating a striking point of contrast. The Devon team has worked tirelessly from its new workshop facility to refine the product and its manufacture, ensuring that it is as sustainable as possible.
The first product to be launched is the Hembury Chair, which captures the beauty and natural variation of Solidwool. Sculptural and comfortable, yet strong enough for everyday use, the design features hand-turned ash legs and steel welded frames locally handcrafted by skilled teams in the South West.
