Lectra Observatory publishes white paper exploring future of sustainability

The Lectra Observatory, which studies innovation and change in the fashion, furniture and automotive markets, has published its latest white paper for the furniture market. This publication explores the current state of sustainability practices in the upholstery industry, identifies the challenges companies face in achieving their sustainability objectives, and highlights the technology available to help them overcome these challenges.

As global awareness of environmental impacts rises, businesses around the world are exploring new ways to reduce their ecological footprint while meeting consumer expectations of increased transparency and eco-friendly products. According to a survey conducted by the Center for Industrial Studies (CSIL), 45% of furniture manufacturer respondents cited “environmental sustainability” as a top priority in all areas of their business strategies.

Sustainability in upholstered furniture involves addressing several critical factors, such as reducing harmful emissions, prioritising safer materials, minimising environmental impact, and ensuring ethical labour practices. A combination of consumer demand and regulatory pressure is driving manufacturers to accelerate their adoption of sustainable practices and adapt to evolving expectations. Regional variations in regulations, consumer preferences and economic conditions influence the pace and scope of sustainable practices globally.

The white paper draws on insights from a panel of international furniture industry experts and specialists, each offering their unique view and experience on the challenges and opportunities in the market. Contributors include: David Pambianco, CEO of Pambianco Strategia di Impresa; Nicola Coropulis, CEO of Poltrona Frau; Cindy Hodnett, Executive Editor, Brand Development at BridgeTower Media; Ovidijus Jalonskis, CEO of Vilmers; Pan Chaoping, Lean Production and Planning Management Director and Tu Jiahui, Director of Product Development, for Kuka Home; Steve Kooy, Technical Director Health and Sustainability from BIFMA; and Clémentine Mitard-Manteau, Product Marketing Director at Lectra.

Maria Modrono, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at Lectra emphasizes the importance of this initiative: “The upholstered furniture manufacturing industry is undergoing significant transformations as it navigates the path toward greater sustainability," she says. "With this white paper, we aim to provide companies with the insights they need to navigate this critical transition. By addressing challenges ahead and leveraging the latest technological advancements, the industry has a unique opportunity to create a more sustainable, transparent and socially responsible future.”

As a leader in technology solutions that accelerate the transition to Industry 4.0 Lectra launched its Observatory last year, to mark its 50th anniversary. The Observatory analyses the changes affecting the fashion, automotive and furniture markets, whether linked to technological evolution, social and environmental challenges, or the transformation of business models. This new white paper is the second in a series about sustainability in Lectra's main markets. The last one was dedicated to fashion, ”Sustainable Fashion: what strategies and technologies”.
