From a single designer to one of the most decorated design teams in the world, the Humanscale Design Studio has quietly shaped how millions of people work. Now the New York–based studio has earned two 2026 iF DESIGN AWARD wins – recognition for the newly launched Diffrient Lounge and the eFloat Quattro table.
The awards spotlight the studio’s distinctive approach to industrial design: solving complex ergonomic challenges through simple, intuitive products that require fewer parts, fewer materials, and less effort from the user.
An independent jury evaluated more than 11,000 submissions from 68 countries this year. Humanscale’s designs stood out for their blend of functionality, environmental responsibility, and design clarity, principles that have guided the studio since its founding in 2002.
Today, the Humanscale Design Studio brings together industrial designers, engineers, and ergonomics specialists who collaborate from the earliest stages of development. Their philosophy is straightforward: the best design should work with the human body, not ask the user to adapt to it.
That approach has helped define modern ergonomic furniture, and continues a legacy shaped by collaboration with legendary designer, Niels Diffrient.
Diffrient Lounge – completing a 20 year old Vision
One of the studio’s two award-winning products carries forward the work of Niels Diffrient, widely regarded as a pioneer of human-centered industrial design in America.
Best known for redefining ergonomic task seating, Diffrient spent decades studying how the human body interacts with furniture. In his later years, he began exploring a different challenge: how to create a lounge chair that could support the body across a range of relaxed postures – rather than locking the user into a single “correct” sitting position.
The Diffrient Lounge brings that idea to life nearly 20 years after the concept first emerged. Developed and refined by the Humanscale Design Studio, the chair adapts naturally to the user through an articulating back and headrest, intuitive adjustments, and a pivoting worksurface designed for laptops and devices.
Its sculptural silhouette and refined materials allow it to move comfortably between settings, from offices and collaborative lounges to hospitality environments and residential interiors.
The design reflects a broader shift in how people work today. As hybrid work blurs the boundaries between office and home, the Diffrient Lounge reimagines what ergonomic seating can look like in more relaxed, flexible environments.
eFloat Quattro: Engineering Movement into the Modern Desk
Humanscale’s second iF-winning design addresses another central element of the contemporary workplace: the height-adjustable desk.
The eFloat Quattro table introduces a four-leg architecture that gives the desk a more architectural presence while maintaining the smooth, nearly silent movement needed for frequent posture changes. By encouraging users to shift naturally between sitting and standing, the desk supports energy, focus, and long-term well-being throughout the workday.
The design also reflects Humanscale’s long-standing emphasis on sustainability. The desk is 99% recyclable and incorporates non-toxic, PVC-free polyurethane cabling, the result of the design studio’s efforts to create a product that is both environmentally responsible and highly durable.
