Furniture Makers' Company hosts evening at Cambridge Town Bumps BBQ

Around 20 members gathered by the River Cam on Tuesday 22nd July 2025 for the Annual Cambridge Town Bumps Barbeque, organised by the Master, Debbie Johnson. Set against the lively backdrop of the historic Bumps races, the evening combined great food, rowing tradition, and fellowship.

Following a delicious barbecue, the evening’s entertainment came in the form of Bumps racing – a unique rowing pursuit event where 18 crews per division race in single file along a 2km course, attempting to catch (‘bump’) the boat ahead without being caught themselves. With over 1,100 rowers competing across seven divisions, the night delivered no shortage of action.

Around £570 raised at the event will be split between our charity and the newly established Andrew Johnson Rowing Foundation, set up in memory of the Master’s late husband. The foundation aims to honour Andrew’s legacy by expanding access to rowing within the local community.

The evening was held with kind support from the Cambridge Rowing Association (CRA), and members were delighted to be joined by several special guests, including John Jenner, CRA vice-President, who shared insights into the history and quirks of the Bumps. Also in attendance were Bill Key, CRA president and Cambridge Veterans rower, and Andrew Morley, captain of Cantabs Rowing Club.
