Bio-based foam offers sustainable alternative

Researchers at Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute have developed a polyurethane foam made from more than 90% bio-based materials, offering furniture manufacturers a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based upholstery foams.

Developed through the OrganoFoam project in collaboration with Friedrich Platt GmbH, the material is suitable for sofas, mattresses and vehicle seating, combining sustainability with conventional PU foam performance.

Bio-based foam proves its durability

Produced from bio-based polyols and isocyanates, the foam requires no natural fibres for structural support while retaining the resilience and stability needed for upholstery applications.

In UV testing, conventional foams became yellow and brittle after 100 hours, while OrganoFoam showed minimal discolouration after 700 hours.

Compression tests confirmed comparable performance with traditional foams, while manufacturing trials demonstrated compatibility with existing cutting, bonding and upholstery processes.

Comfort with wider application potential

A demonstration sofa received positive feedback for sitting and lying comfort.

Potential applications extend beyond furniture to protective packaging, acoustic insulation and medical positioning aids.

Researchers believe the innovation could help manufacturers reduce fossil-based raw material use and environmental impact without compromising quality.

Funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, the project supports more sustainable foam production.
