A fine day for all at the Qwood Technical Afternoon and Beer Festival

In July, a number of key suppliers to the joinery industry sponsored a technical afternoon and beer festival at the factory and offices of Qwood in Oldham.

Over 50 guests from the timber window and joinery industry attended. They all experienced a day where they were able to hear technical presentations from leading suppliers, and then relax with food and beer whilst listening to the live music laid on by the host Qwood.

It was a fantastic day. The sun shone and in the summer warmth the guests mingled around exhibitions from the major suppliers, set up in the spacious grounds around the Qwood factory. Selected technical presentations were held for joiners wishing to learn about the latest products and services that can help their businesses to grow. In addition, there were guided tours of the Qwood factory.

The LEAN manufacturing processes, which have been the backbone for the innovation of Qwood composite beads and bars, was much in evidence. Guests were able to see for themselves how efficient system and production processes help the smooth flow of an order from receipt right through to despatch – the same day if required!

The sponsoring suppliers who helped to lay on this unique event were:

Qwood, British Woodworking Federation (BWF), Wood Window Alliance (WWA), OH Door & Panel, Sash & Door Hardware (SDH), Deventer, International Timber, Stegherr, Teknos, John Penny Woodworking Machinery, Remmers, and Whitehill Tools.

All were delighted with the response to this idea of providing timber window manufacturers and joiners with an opportunity to get up to date with industry developments. At the same time relax and network amongst friends in a friendly environment.

Once the opportunity for the guests to absorb the suppliers’ product information had passed, then the food, drink and entertainment began. Well into the evening, as the sun was setting, the occasion was enhanced by the sounds of some great music from 52 Skidoo. Modelled on a 1920’s band from Harlem in New York, the band played classic pieces from that time.

Feedback of the afternoon and evening has been fantastic. Sean Parnaby, MD of West Port said: “The whole event was very informative and entertaining. It was good to see so many sponsors with good products all in one place.” Also, Gary Ewing of SDH commented: “It was a really positive day. The way it was organised was really professional and we got some good leads from the networking opportunities that were created.”

Tim Hayes, marketing manager of  Qwood, remarked afterwards:

“This novel idea of bringing suppliers and joiners together has really worked. We are very pleased that so many guests were able to join us. From all the feedback we have had they obviously enjoyed the mix of industry information and social networking. The fine weather also helped!”
