FURNITURE & JOINERY PRODUCTION

The compliance landscape is reshaping the way the furniture sector operates. From the Government’s proposed overhaul of the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations, to new EU-wide formaldehyde emission limits under REACH and growing demand for credible carbon reporting, manufacturers are facing change on multiple fronts. Together, these developments signal a broader shift in furniture manufacturing.

The traditional model of compliance is giving way to one built around evidence. Manufacturers are increasingly expected not only to produce safe products, but also to demonstrate how they perform, what they contain, how they are made and their environmental impact.

The debate surrounding fire safety reform – detailed from page 34 – reflects this shift, with the Government’s response to its recent consultation awaited. Any changes must reflect modern manufacturing while maintaining the UK’s high fire safety standards.

The new REACH formaldehyde requirements assess emissions from the finished product rather than substances used during manufacture, putting testing, quality assurance and supply chain documentation at the heart of compliance.

From page 40, Thomas Brenner, Head of Global Marketing at Fagus-GreCon, explains why investing in testing and traceability will better prepare manufacturers for the new requirements while strengthening customer confidence.

Carbon measurement is also becoming a commercial requirement and a tool for improving product design and manufacturing efficiency. From page 42, Planet Mark explores how sustainability data can provide a competitive advantage.

Together, these developments point towards demonstrable performance rather than simple compliance. While this brings greater regulatory complexity, it also creates opportunity. Businesses investing in testing, robust data, transparent supply chains and sustainable product development will be best placed to meet future regulation and customer expectations.
