FURNITURE & JOINERY PRODUCTION

The Furniture & Joinery Production team has returned from a highly productive and encouraging edition of the Professional Woodworking Expo. While there is no sugarcoating the challenging conditions facing the industry, the overriding sentiment from our discussions across the show floor was that ingenuity is thriving despite adversity.

One of the clearest examples of this was the emergence of partnerships between complementary, cross-sector businesses, such as the newly launched Dutch Joinery Alliance. These collaborations demonstrate the growing value of connected expertise in helping manufacturers navigate persistent labour shortages, increasingly demanding sustainability requirements and ever-shorter lead times.

Beyond addressing these immediate challenges, such alliances deliver a host of operational advantages, including more integrated production workflows, increased output, consistent quality control and the efficiency of working through a single point of contact. It’s encouraging to see that the appetite to adapt, collaborate and find more inventive ways of working remains strong.

Our full review of the show will be available to read within our upcoming August issue.

Elsewhere in this issue, we explore the work of I Am Here, a global leader in mental health and wellbeing solutions for business, while SATRA explores the growing importance of tackling Scope 3 emissions across the supply chain. We also showcase a range of investment and innovation stories, from Moss Joinery’s investment in a HOMAG SAWTEQ S-200 beam saw and smartWOP software, to Vanity Hall’s latest edgebanding upgrade and Michael Pepper Joinery’s expansion with new panel saw technology supplied by TM Machinery.

Alongside these case studies, we look at how retrofit is helping manufacturers improve the efficiency and sustainability of existing equipment, and discover why WISA®-Birch plywood from James Latham was the material of choice for the bespoke interiors of Southspace, a unique co-working project in a beautifully restored 16th-century building.

Happy reading!
